Practical exercise at OUMNH: Detail
(These exercises are set in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, but could be adapted as required.)
Examples: Ornament
(For larger images and information, see the image gallery at the end of this section.)

These are a selection of studies of the interior of the Museum of Natural History. Some of the work was commissioned by Ruskin himself and carved by the O’Shea brothers
Materials: Cream and blue paper, pencil, watercolour and gouache, white china pencil.
Exercise:
- Select an ornamental detail with obvious symmetry and pattern.
- Use coloured paper to help emphasize the light and dark in the architecture.
- Place your drawing thoughtfully on the paper so the main detail is in focus and fades to the edge of the paper.
