Practical exercise at OUMNH: Volume

In these studies Ruskin uses tone to create a sense of volume. The skill is to alternate light against the dark, both on the object and the background.

 

Materials: pencil, cream paper, grey wash.

Exercise. Take a small section of stonework and alternate the light and dark to emphasise the shadows and create volume.
